Celebrating Innovation and Generosity at the HMRI Gala Ball

June 22, 2024

It was an honour to attend the Hunter Medical Research Institute (HMRI) Gala Ball, held at the magnificent Newcastle City Hall. This event, which raises essential funds for life-changing medical research, was a dazzling celebration of elegance, entertainment, and immense generosity.

As a proud HMRI researcher, I attended to discuss some of the groundbreaking innovations we are working on, to express my gratitude to the incredible supporters of HMRI, and to ensure that Aboriginal health remains at the forefront of everything we do. The night brought together 260 guests from various walks of life, all united by a common goal—to support vital medical research that improves health outcomes locally, nationally, and globally.
The evening began with a formal presentation by Professor Frances Kay-Lambkin, HMRI’s CEO and Institute Director. She eloquently highlighted the crucial role that community support plays in driving medical breakthroughs. Her words resonated deeply with me as she emphasised, “Through research, we bring hope and healthier lives to our community". It was a pleasure to be seated together and to have the opportunity to connect throughout the evening also.

The funds raised during the Gala Ball, an impressive $205,000, will directly benefit HMRI’s ongoing research initiatives. These initiatives aim to transform patient care across various areas, including stroke, heart disease, diabetes, dementia, cancer, respiratory diseases, pregnancy, mental health, and emerging areas such as climate health. It was heartening to see so many generous individuals and businesses come together to support these critical areas of need.
One of the most memorable moments of the night was the silent auction, followed by a live auction led by the renowned auctioneer, Gavan Reynolds. The spirit of giving was palpable, and it was wonderful to see the community’s enthusiasm in supporting medical research.

The Gala Ball also celebrated the profound link between science and art. This year, HMRI continued its initiative of integrating art into the event by offering artists up to 30% commission to cover expenses for their donated work. As Kristie Atkins, HMRI Foundation Chair and Board Member, noted, “The link between science and art is profound and multifaceted, intertwining creativity, innovation, and exploration”

Throughout the evening, I had the opportunity to meet and thank many incredible people who support the work at HMRI. Their dedication and generosity are what make our research possible. In a tough economic climate, their willingness to contribute to our cause is both humbling and inspiring.

Reflecting on the event, I am filled with a sense of gratitude and optimism. The HMRI Gala Ball was not just a fundraising event; it was a celebration of the collective effort to improve health and wellbeing. The funds raised will have a significant impact on advancing our research and bringing us closer to our vision of creating the healthiest million people on the planet.

I am proud to be part of an institute that values community support and strives to make a difference through innovative research. The HMRI Gala Ball is a testament to what we can achieve when we come together with a shared purpose. I look forward to continuing this journey and making even greater strides in medical research with the support of our wonderful community.
